White skin and earth
ruby wine stained lips
lunchbox saint to her son,
a wretch at the stone
carrying her cross, heavy.
Blue-grey eyes and sky
numb legs trudge on
chest burning, breath rising
dead leaves on skeleton trees
clear snot drips, slowly.
Violet fingers and sunset
a crow cackles above
mourning song, darkness come
tongue tastes snowflakes falling
lying upon him, weeping.
Black hair and roses
bells on mountainside ring
lunchbox this morning, hollow
grandmother and boy cling
Winifred’s frozen smile, haunting.
